Turkey Leg and Mead 2007
July 28, 2007 - 3:00 PM - Closing
So, you're back!?! Well, another year is in the books, and this year's event did not disappoint. The day started off around noon when the Grady's showed up, complete with a borrowed camper and a big kettle for boiling corn. The Tibbett's were close behind, and by 3:00, the party had started in full.
The winner for best beer this year would have to go to the Wheat, a perrennial favorite, followed closely, and surprisingly, by the Stout. This has been a learning experience for me as I never expected so many of my guests to enjoy a good Stout, but you have surprised me, dear guest. You are a far more savvy beer drinker than I could have ever thought! On a sour note, the Cream Ale, a special request from last year's event, did not turn out so well. It's back to the drawing board for that one, or it could disappear from the offering altogether until I can get my recipe worked out. The ESB was OK, good enough to drink, and the mead was more popular this year than ever!
A couple of beer related statistics:
- Dog's Butt Beer Consumed - 17 gallons (20 gallons brewed, a new TLM record!)
- Mead consumed - 4.5 gallons (a new TLM record!)
- Commercial Beer Consumed... who cares...
The 2007 TLM Cornhole Open started promptly at 5:00 with 24 teams (another TLM record). Competition was fast a furious in the opening rounds with a few upsets and surprises. When all was said and done, though, it was last year's champs, the Rusty Trombones, burning their way through the winner's bracket without so much as a major scare, playing for the repeat against the upstart Holers, who had been previously beaten by Rusty's earlier in the tournament. In the best of three match, though, the Holers prevailed winning the opening two games under the lights to send Rusty's home.
The quote of the year is attributed to Tim Abhold. This quote was apparently inspired by some sour grapes had having lost a cornhole match, but that is unconfirmed. Even so, I think it pretty much sums it up:
I'd rather lose with a mead in my hand than win with a Miller Lite.
Jenny, Ethan, and I would like to thank all of you that attended this year's gathering. It was certainly one for the books. The weather was perfect, the company was fantastic, and it seemed like everybody had a great time. I know we all did. If you were unable to make it this year, keep your calendars flexible for the same timeframe next year. The date will be announced in late winter to early spring. Thanks again!!!
